Turf for Erosion & Sediment Control

In 2013 Australian Standards for natural turf for erosion and sediment control were established based on research and proven ability to be very beneficial in erosion and sediment control (AS 5181:2017).   In 2025 Turf NSW is establishing the state’s first erosion and sediment demonstration site in Richmond.  This site has been designed on the successes of two sites in QLD at Redlands and Sunshine Coast.

The NSW demonstration site will serve as an educational platform through field days and training programs and will be a great resource for many industries dealing with erosion control, local government, water and sediment filtration, riverbank remediation, farming and general landowners.

The demonstration site is due to be operational from March 2025.

Below are links to the report and videos produced from the Erosion Control – Turf Research & Development Facility Project (TU12022).

In the coming months, Turf NSW will develop new resources for the NSW Demonstration Site.

Erosion Control - Turf Research & Development Facility Report

Shane Holborn, BioScience Australia. The turf industry levy-funded project, TU12022 Erosion control - Turf research and demonstration facility, has been building awareness of the use of natural turfgrass for erosion control for the past two years. The large-scale demonstration facility has successfully engaged policy and decision-makers from federal, state and local governments, and has also provided hands-on education on erosion control to members of the local government, construction, landscaping and mining sectors.
